Physician Assistant Prescriptive Authority (August 12, 2009)
The State Board of Osteopathic Medicine’s final regulations regarding physician assistant (PA) prescriptive authority went into effect on August 8, 2009. The approved changes will allow PAs to prescribe and dispense medication.
In order for a PA to be granted prescriptive privileges, the supervising physician must complete a Written Agreement – Physician Assistant Prescriptive Authority form for each PA and return it to the SBOM.
The form may be downloaded at http://www.dos.state.pa.us/bpoa/lib/bpoa/20/ostbd/PA_Written_Agreement_Prescriptive_Authority.pdf. PAs may not prescribe until the application is complete and the board issues the prescriptive authority approval letter.
The final regulations and an explanation of the changes may be found at http://www.pabulletin.com/secure/data/vol39/39-32/1417.html.
